Frequently Asked Questions
Oil or water-based polyurethane: which is right for my floor?
Once floor sanding is complete, you’ll need to think about the finish and what will be most suitable for your home. Once you’ve cleaned up after sanding floors, you’ll need to apply a polyurethane finish. This can be either water or oil-based, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each type depending on factors such as whether you prefer a more natural finish or you need enhanced durability in a busy home.
Opt for water-based polyurethane for clarity and speed
The great advantage in using a water-based product is that it allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. This is a particularly effective finish if you have lighter floors or you’re trying to achieve a particular effect like a grey floor where the warmer tones of an oil-based finish would work against the desired tone.
Water-based polyurethane is also exceptionally quick drying, meaning you can apply the required 4-5 coats in one or two days. Clean up is also a breeze as you simply wash out your brushes in water. However, because the percentage of solids in this type of product is lower than in an oil-based finish, at around 30-35%, you will have to screen and refinish your floor every 2-3 years.
Choose oil-based polyurethane for warmth and protection
Oil-based polyurethane is made up of 45-50% solids, meaning it gives a far more protective finish than a water-based product. You don’t need to apply as many coats of an oil-based polyurethane, although you will have to wait a full twenty-four hours between coats. However, you’ll only need to apply three coats to create a long-lasting and durable finish which will need reapplying every 5-7 years. Both water and oil-based polyurethanes should ideally be given a full 30 days to cure properly.
An oil-based product will bring a beautiful warmth and richness to your floors, and it’s the ideal finish for oak and other medium-toned woods. Although you can’t mix water-based and oil-based products, if you decide you prefer the more durable finish of an oil-based polyurethane, you can always hire a floor sanding company, such as The Floor Refinishing Specialists, or have a go at sanding and finishing your floors with an oil-based polyurethane yourself.
